Teaching in the Master’s Program in Narrative Medicine: Francesca Bracco

I didn’t choose it myself, but I had the honor of being chosen to offer my small contribution to this Master’s program, which personally marked a new beginning and a milestone in my journey. For this reason, today I feel deep gratitude and a strong sense of belonging—factors that, as I learned right here, are true coping tools and generators of well-being! I am also happy to be, in turn, an active part of this ever-evolving “narrative community.”

Why enroll in this program among the many training opportunities available?

Rich in content and tools, in opportunities for dialogue and sharing, and not least in hands-on practice, it stands out because it:

  • fosters personal and professional growth in a comprehensive way
  • facilitates relationships and connections between teachers and students, in a form of education that values reciprocity over one-way instruction
  • promotes inclusivity by welcoming and valuing different perspectives, within a form of nonviolent communication that aspires to become a true “habitus”
  • has an international scope, with faculty from different nationalities and disciplines who encourage alternative viewpoints and broaden mental horizons
  • teaches and allows participants to experience numerous techniques of language analysis—verbal, nonverbal, and paraverbal—validated by years of scientific research, innovation, and tradition
  • provides both the time and the means to care for oneself and, consequently, to be able to care for others

When I found myself “on the other side,” I tried to convey the passion that drives me and to “give back” the knowledge I had gained, with authenticity, curiosity, and a touch of personality. I immediately felt at ease, as I see education as an encounter and a shared growth experience within a familiar, welcoming, and proactive environment.

In “my students,” I have observed interest and attentive participation, even among those attending remotely, where the screen could have created distance. Instead, even the more reserved participants, step by step, seem to feel free to share reflections and emotions. Thank you!

I have always returned home feeling renewed, satisfied, and enthusiastic, each time recognizing how powerful and gentle Narrative Medicine is in creating connections, weaving stories, and promoting well-being and meaning. In other words: a dream that is, at the same time, a reality and an inexhaustible source of new dreams!

Promoting a narrative approach—grounded in attentive listening and in all the emotional and cognitive “tools” that will form your personal “toolbox”—means:

  • encouraging improvement in your workplace and work environment, with kindness, competence, and authority
  • supporting relationships among all the actors in the “care process,” transforming it into a “story of care” that welcomes and values every perspective
  • acquiring tools to manage conflicts and reduce complaints/legal cases caused by “lack of communication” or “poor communication”
  • cultivating humility—keeping one’s feet on the ground—without giving up vision, that is, nurturing spirituality
  • feeling well with oneself and with others, learning to name emotions in an atmosphere of kindness and non-judgment

… and much more, of course!

Each person will discover their own benefits and advantages!
